Frist, start with the travel dates you have in mind. If you know where you are leaving from or where you want the trip to end, add those locations too. Both are optional so add whatever information you have planned so far. Then describe the trip you want to take. You can keep it simple or get as specific as you want. Tell the planner where you want to go, who you are traveling with, what kind of vehicle you are driving, and what you want to do or see along the way.

If you are traveling in a 35-foot RV, mention it. If you need full hookups or pet-friendly campgrounds, include that! You can also ask for shorter driving days, scenic routes, hiking stops, dark sky areas, food along your route, rest stops, or other things you want to see.

For example:

We're starting in Salt Lake City and want to explore Utah's Mighty 5, including Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches, and Canyonlands. We're looking for scenic drives, great hikes, dark sky stargazing spots, and interesting attractions along the route. We have a dog and prefer RV parks with full hookups.

Now here is the fun part! You can use the itinerary to check whether the trip actually works with the time you have.

Add Stops and Campgrounds From the Map

As we mentioned, every route is editable right from the start. You can remove a stop, change the number of nights somewhere, or add another destination as your plans change. If a suggested campground does not work for your trip, you can search for another option without rebuilding the route. The map gives you tons of options for campgrounds and RV parks along the way. Once you find a campground you prefer, swap it into the itinerary.

The map also gives you another way to build the trip. If you see a campground that interests you, click it to review the information available for that property. Depending on the campground, that may include nightly pricing and availability for your dates.

You can add the campground directly to the itinerary or use it to replace another suggested stay. This is especially useful when you are looking for campgrounds near a destination and want to see how each options fits your driving route. Participating Park With Us campgrounds can be booked through the trip planner. For other properties, you may be able to send a booking request from the itinerary.

You can also save optional contact information, including your name, email address, and phone number, to prefill those requests.

For campground owners using Park With Us, the planner provides another way to be discovered by travelers while they are choosing where to stay.

Find Attractions and Things to See Along Your Route

Beyond just campgrounds, you can use your trip description to tell the planner what you want to find between destinations. If you are searching for attractions along your route, include the types of places you are interested in. The same applies if you want scenic drives, restaurants, rest stops, hikes, or other points of interest.

A family trip might prioritize easy hikes and places to stop with kids. Someone traveling with a dog may want outdoor attractions and pet-friendly campgrounds. An RV traveler could ask for shorter driving days and stops that make sense for a larger vehicle.

Estimate Campground Costs Before You Book

Longer road trips can involve several campground reservations, so it helps to see those costs together.

The Road Trip Planner provides an estimated total for the suggested campground stays in your itinerary.

If that estimate is higher than you want to spend, you can adjust the trip. Search farther from a popular destination, choose a campground with a lower nightly rate, or change the number of nights you plan to stay.

The estimate is not a final booking price. It gives you a starting point for comparing campground options while you are still working on the route.

Share and Edit the Trip With Other Travelers

Once you have a route you like, share the itinerary link with the people traveling with you.

Anyone with the link can open the same trip and make edits. A friend can add a stop they want to visit. Someone else can change a campground or adjust part of the route.

Everyone works from the same itinerary instead of keeping separate maps or sending updated screenshots back and forth.
